About Devinium

Devinium is a Melbourne software consultancy, in continuous operation since October 2007.

We run a small senior team, fully remote, with discipline-driven operations. We fix data problems at the source.

How Devinium got here

Devinium is a Melbourne software practice. The team has been shipping production software continuously since October 2007. How we build hasn't changed in two decades. We've just sharpened it.

What shaped the way we build came out of nearly two decades of watching the same patterns repeat. Most of the systems we were asked to rescue had the same underlying shape. The feature list looked different every time. The data model underneath was broken in the same three ways. No single source of truth. The same fields duplicated across tools. Business rules hidden inside spreadsheet formulas. We stopped arguing about the interface and started every engagement with the database.

That approach lands across industries. Hospitals tracking referrals across systems. Manufacturers quoting jobs from spreadsheets. Field operations losing context between site and office. Founders rebuilding what they prototyped with Claude or Cursor for real users. The pattern repeats: scattered data, manual re-keying, business rules trapped in formulas. A proper database lifts those out of the cracks.

The shape of that foundation matters more now than it did a decade ago. AI agents need somewhere to act. A canonical record per thing, an audit trail, a permissions model the agent can read. Most consultancies are discovering this one failed pilot at a time. We have been building it since 2007.

That is the business now. A small senior team that builds the foundation first and the surface on top. Same company. Same people. Clearer point of view.

The database-first difference

Most business software problems are actually data modelling problems.

We design the database foundation that makes everything else possible. Interfaces, integrations, automation, reporting. All draw from the same source of truth. The same foundation carries the products we ship on it.

The hospital systems we built in 2012 are still in production.

Where this lands

Hospitals, manufacturing, education, field operations and wealth advisory. Some named, some kept private at clients' request. All still in production.

Named clients include Newhaven Group, Civica, Barwon Health and TimberTruss. Ask and we'll connect you with a named reference.

Devinium designed and built the CMyTrees app from concept to production. It won the Australian Business Award for Eco Innovation in 2021. Browse all our case studies to see the same database-first approach across other industries.

Who runs Devinium

Marty Papamanolis, Managing Director of Devinium

Marty Papamanolis

Managing Director

Marty leads every client engagement personally. He writes the data model himself on each one. Schema decisions are where the value compounds, and they live with him until the system stops needing him.

Database-first became the point of view after a decade and a half of watching projects fail when the schema was an afterthought. The patterns repeat: scattered data, manual re-keying, business rules trapped in formulas. Start with the schema; the rest follows. The work changes shape across industries; the principle does not.

He has been running this practice continuously since October 2007. Same team, same clients, same way of building.

The team behind the work

We are a small senior team, fully remote. Small enough that senior work is not rationed. Stable enough that no single engagement stops when someone takes leave.

Remote only works when the work is legible. Every task is tracked in ClickUp with sub-task granularity. Every handoff written down. Status visible without a meeting. The same discipline we bring to client systems, we run internally.

The people who shape your database, integrations and interfaces are the people you talk to on the call. No layered account management. No junior analysts briefed after the fact. Seniority is the default here, not the pitch.

A real photo is coming. We'd rather wait than ship a stock shot.

How we're different

Scale

Right-sized solutions

A small project is meaningful to us, not a rounding error. You work with senior people, not junior analysts learning on your time. Big consultancies need transformation budgets to engage. We don't.

Longevity

Continuous since 2007

We'll be here for phase 2, the support call, the "add this feature" request in 3 years. A senior team means no single point of failure. Freelancers move on. The team stays.

Foundation

Built to last

We design the database underneath so the system doesn't need rebuilding when you outgrow it. No-code platforms work right up until you hit performance, security, or logic limits.

Fit

Built for what makes you different

Your competitive advantage lives in the processes that are unique to you. We build for those. Industry vendors build for the average firm.

vs. AI code generators

Prototypes vs production

Claude, Cursor and Lovable are genuinely useful for sketches and demos. They are not useful for systems with real customers, real data, and real failure modes. We take the sketch and build the production version on a proper database foundation with migrations, auth, error handling, and the tests that stop the 3am pager. We use the same tools ourselves for early sketches. The difference is knowing when to stop sketching and start engineering.

Where we work

Fully remote means work happens where it is best done. Most of the team works from home, logged in and writing. Marty keeps a desk on Queen Street in Melbourne for the conversations that are easier face to face.

Most consultancies present a bigger footprint than they have. We do not. A small senior team, working from where the work actually gets done.

Queen Street, Melbourne. Phone-quality real, not staged.
